Henri Fayol, the father of modern management, gave 14 general principles of management. Any five of them are explained below:
1. Division of Work: The total work is divided into small tasks and assigned to different people according to their specialisation. This leads to specialisation, greater efficiency and better quality of work.
2. Authority and Responsibility: Authority is the right to give orders and get them obeyed; responsibility is the duty to complete the assigned task. Fayol said authority and responsibility must go hand in hand — one should not exist without the other.
3. Discipline: Members of the organisation must obey and respect the rules, regulations and agreements that govern it. Good discipline results from good leadership, clear rules and fair penalties, and is essential for smooth working.
4. Unity of Command: Each employee should receive orders and instructions from only one superior. Dual command creates confusion, conflict and indiscipline, so it should be avoided.
