Taylor's techniques of scientific management — functional foremanship, standardisation and simplification, method study, motion study, time study, fatigue study and the differential piece-rate system — replace guesswork with scientific methods to raise efficiency.

F.W. Taylor developed scientific management to replace the old rule-of-thumb methods with a scientific study of work. He suggested the following techniques:

  • Functional Foremanship: A technique in which planning and execution work is separated, and a worker is guided by several specialist foremen (such as route clerk, instruction card clerk, speed boss, gang boss, inspector, etc.), each an expert in his own area.
  • Standardisation and Simplification of Work: Setting standards for raw materials, tools, methods and working conditions (standardisation) and removing unnecessary varieties, sizes and operations (simplification) to reduce waste and cost.
  • Method Study: Finding the one best method of doing a job so that cost is minimised and customer satisfaction is maximised.
  • Motion Study: Studying the movements of workers and machines to eliminate unnecessary movements and keep only the useful ones.
  • Time Study: Determining the standard time required to complete a task efficiently, which helps in fixing fair work targets and wages. …
