Sympathetic: short preganglionic, long postganglionic fibre. Parasympathetic: long preganglionic, short postganglionic fibre. Sympathetic increases heart rate; parasympathetic decreases heart rate. Spinal nerves are m...

Sympathetic and parasympathetic systems differ in ganglionic fibre length and opposite effects on heart rate; spinal nerves are mixed as they combine sensory and motor roots.

(a)(i) In the sympathetic nervous system, the preganglionic nerve fibre is relatively short (since the sympathetic ganglia lie close to the spinal cord, forming the sympathetic chain) while the postganglionic fibre is long, travelling a greater distance to reach the target organ. In the parasympathetic nervous system, the arrangement is reversed - the preganglionic fibre is long (the ganglia lie close to or within the target organ) while the postganglionic fibre is correspondingly short.

(ii) The sympathetic nervous system is generally excitatory to the heart - stimulation increases the heart rate and force of contraction (fight-or-flight response). The parasympathetic nervous system (via the vagus nerve) is inhibitory to the heart - its stimulation decreases the heart rate, helping to conserve and restore normal (resting) body functions. …
