Nerve fibres (axons) possess two fundamental physiological properties that allow the nervous system to function:
(a) Irritability (excitability): This is the inherent capacity of a nerve fibre's membrane to respond to a stimulus (chemical, electrical, mechanical, thermal, etc.) that exceeds a certain threshold intensity, by undergoing a change in membrane potential — depolarization — and generating a nerve impulse (action potential).
