Extend the textbook's two-disease table into a chart of the other STDs, one row per disease, with the organism, the symptoms and the control measures.

What the chart should contain. Use the same headings as the chapter's table so the new rows can be compared with syphilis and gonorrhoea: Name of disease, Causative agent (bacterium, virus or protozoan), Infection site and symptoms, Preventive measures, Treatment.

  1. AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome): caused by HIV, a retrovirus; long incubation, then fever, weight loss, repeated infections as the immune system fails; no cure, controlled with antiretroviral drugs; prevented by safe sex, screened blood and sterile needles.
  2. Genital herpes: herpes simplex virus (HSV-2 mainly); painful blisters and ulcers on the genitals that recur; antiviral drugs relieve but do not cure; prevented by condoms and avoiding contact during outbreaks.
  3. Genital warts: human papilloma virus (HPV); warty growths on the genitals, some strains linked to cervical cancer; removed surgically or chemically; prevented by the HPV vaccine and condoms.
  4. Hepatitis B: hepatitis B virus; jaundice, fatigue, liver damage, may become chronic; antiviral treatment; prevented by vaccination, safe sex and screened blood.
  5. Chlamydiasis: the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis; often silent, otherwise discharge and burning on urination, pelvic inflammation and infertility in women; cured with antibiotics.
  6. Trichomoniasis: the protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis; frothy discharge, itching and burning; cured with metronidazole.
  7. Chancroid: the bacterium Haemophilus ducreyi; painful genital ulcers and swollen groin nodes; cured with antibiotics. …
