Gametogenesis
Gametogenesis is the process by which gametes are formed in sexually reproducing animals. The male gamete is the sperm (spermatozoon) and the female gamete is the ovum or egg; both are ultimately derived from the primordial germ cells present in the gonads (testis and ovary respectively). The process of forming sperm is called spermatogenesis, and the process of forming the egg is called oogenesis; while broadly similar in outline, each proceeds through its own distinct multiplication, growth and maturation phases and produces a gamete of very different size and structure. …
