Having covered classification and nomenclature, the chapter now turns to the substantive chemistry of alcohols and phenols together, organised into three parts taken up in the sections that follow: how each class is actually PREPARED in the laboratory and industrially (section 11.4.1 for alcohols, 11.4.2 for phenols); their PHYSICAL properties, dominated throughout by hydrogen bonding (section 11.4.3); and their CHEMICAL properties (section 11.4.4), which is further split internally into laboratory identification tests, reactions that break the O-H bond (acidity, esterification), reactions that break the C-O bond of alcohols specifically (halide formation, dehydration, oxidation), and the electrophilic-substit …
