Step 1. State the general reaction (section 13.6.5). An aliphatic or aromatic PRIMARY amine, heated with chloroform in the presence of potassium hydroxide, is converted into the corresponding alkyl or aryl isocyanide (carbylamine), a foul- or offensive-smelling compound: R-NH2 + CHCl3 + 3 KOH, heat, gives R-NC + 3 KCl + 3 H2O.

Step 2. Worked example 1: an aliphatic primary amine. Ethylamine, CH3-CH2-NH2, heated with chloroform and KOH, gives ethyl isocyanide, CH3-CH2-NC (a foul-smelling liquid), plus 3 KCl + 3 H2O.

Step 3. Worked example 2: an aromatic primary amine. Aniline, C6H5-NH2, heated the same way, gives phenyl isocyanide, C6H5-NC, plus 3 KCl + 3 H2O. …
