H=U+PVH=U+PV; by the first law ΔU=q−w\Delta U = q - w, so work done by the system lowers UU unless compensated by heat absorbed.

Enthalpy (HH) is a thermodynamic state function defined as H=U+PVH = U + PV, where UU is the internal energy, PP the pressure and VV the volume of the system. It represents the total heat content of a system, and the change in enthalpy at constant pressure equals the heat exchanged with the surroundings: ΔH=qp\Delta H = q_p.

Effect of work done by the system on internal energy: by the first law of thermodynamics, ΔU=q−w\Delta U = q - w, where ww is work done BY the system (IUPAC/Maharashtra-board sign convention used in this form). If the system does work on the surroundings (e.g. gas expansion pushing a piston) and no heat is simultaneously absorbed (q=0q = 0), then ΔU=−w\Delta U = -w, i.e. the internal energy of the system decreases — the energy for the work is drawn from the system's own store …
