Third law of thermodynamics: the entropy of a pure, perfectly crystalline substance is exactly zero at the absolute zero of temperature (0 K), since at 0 K the constituent particles are in a single, perfectly ordered arrangement with no thermal disorder — there is only one possible microstate, so S=kBln⁡W=kBln⁡1=0S = k_B\ln W = k_B \ln 1 = 0.

Two uses:

  1. Unlike enthalpy or internal energy (for which only changes, ΔH\Delta H/ΔU\Delta U, can be measured), the third law gives an absolute zero-point reference for entropy, so the absolute entropy (S∘S^\circ) of any substance at any temperature TT can be calculated by integrating heat-capacity data from 0 K up to TT. …
