First-law equations simplify differently for isothermal vs adiabatic ideal-gas processes; pH and pOH sum to 14 from the water ion-product constant.

First law for isothermal process (ideal gas): Since internal energy of an ideal gas depends only on temperature, ΔT=0⇒ΔU=0\Delta T = 0 \Rightarrow \Delta U = 0. From the first law, ΔU=q+w=0\Delta U = q + w = 0, so

q=−wq = -w

(heat absorbed equals the negative of work done on the system — i.e. all heat absorbed is used to do work).

First law for adiabatic process: No heat is exchanged with surroundings, q=0q = 0. From the first law, ΔU=q+w=w\Delta U = q + w = w:

ΔU=w\Delta U = w

(all of the work done on/by the system changes its internal energy/temperature directly).
