It exists as two possible stereoisomers: the FACIAL (fac) isomer, in which the three NO2- ligands occupy one triangular face of the octahedron (all three mutually cis to one another, each 90 degrees from the other two), and the MERIDIONAL (mer) isomer, in which the three NO2- ligands instead lie along one meridian (a plane cutting through the centre of the octahedron), so that two of the three NO2- are trans (180 degrees) to each other while the third is cis to both. …
