Diastereoisomers: stereoisomers that are not related as non-superimposable mirror images of each other (i.e. not enantiomers). They have different physical and chemical properties from one another, e.g. geometric (cis-trans) isomers, or molecules with multiple stereocentres that are not complete mirror images.
cis and trans isomers of : in this octahedral complex, the two chloride ligands can be arranged:
- cis isomer: the two ligands occupy adjacent positions, 90° apart.
- trans isomer: the two ligands occupy opposite positions, 180° apart, with the four ligands in the equatorial plane between them.
Reference electrode: an electrode whose potential is known, constant, and highly reproducible, used as a fixed standard against which the potential of another (working/indicator) electrode is measured; e.g. the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE, by convention ) or the saturated calomel electrode.
