a. Optical activity: the property of certain substances (chiral molecules lacking a plane/centre of symmetry) to rotate the plane of plane-polarised light as it passes through them, either clockwise (dextrorotatory) or anticlockwise (laevorotatory).

b. Ligand: an ion or a neutral molecule that possesses at least one lone pair of electrons which it donates to the central metal atom/ion, forming a coordinate (dative) covalent bond, in a coordination compound. Examples: NH3NH_3, H2OH_2O, Cl−Cl^-, CN−CN^-.
