Step 1. Natural osmosis moves solvent from the dilute/pure side INTO the concentrated solution side, driven by the concentration difference.

Step 2. If an external mechanical pressure is applied to the SOLUTION side, and that pressure exceeds the solution's own osmotic pressure, the natural osmotic driving force is overcome and OVERRIDDEN.

Step 3. Under this excess applied pressure, PURE solvent is forced the opposite way -- OUT of the concentrated solution, through the membrane (which still blocks the solute), into the dilute/pure-solvent side -- this deliberately reversed flow is called reverse osmosis. …
