Impedance of a series LCR circuit derived from the phasor diagram.

In a series LCR circuit carrying current II (common to all elements, taken as reference phasor along the x-axis):

  • Voltage across R, VR=IRV_R=IR, is in phase with II.
  • Voltage across L, VL=IXLV_L=IX_L, leads II by 90°90°.
  • Voltage across C, VC=IXCV_C=IX_C, lags II by 90°90°.

Since VLV_L and VCV_C are exactly opposite in phase (both perpendicular to II but in opposite senses), their resultant is (VL−VC)(V_L-V_C), still perpendicular to VRV_R. By the phasor (vector) diagram, the applied voltage VV is the resultant of the perpendicular phasors VRV_R and (VL−VC)(V_L-V_C):

V=VR2+(VL−VC)2=IR2+(XL−XC)2V = \sqrt{V_R^2+(V_L-V_C)^2} = I\sqrt{R^2+(X_L-X_C)^2} …
