Magnetization measures how strongly a material is magnetized per unit volume; it relates to susceptibility and permeability through μr=1+χ\mu_r = 1+\chi.

Magnetization (MM): defined as the net magnetic moment per unit volume of a magnetic material:

M=mVM = \frac{m}{V}

where mm is the (net) magnetic dipole moment and VV is the volume of the material.

SI unit: ampere per metre (A/m) — the same unit as magnetic field intensity HH.

Dimensional formula: since magnetic moment has dimensions [L2A][L^2 A] (current ×\times area) and volume has dimensions [L3][L^3]:

[M]=[L2A][L3]=[L−1A1][M] = \frac{[L^2A]}{[L^3]} = [L^{-1}A^1]
