On a slippery or sandy patch the available friction coefficient is too small for the driving wheels to push the vehicle: pressed hard, the wheels SPIN — sliding against the surface — so only the smaller kinetic friction acts, and the spinning also digs the wheels deeper into sand. The remedies all work by restoring enough STATIC friction: (i) place higher-friction material (gravel, dry sand, a mat, twigs, a plank) under the driving wheels to raise the effective μ; (ii) accelerate very gently so the tyres keep ROLLING without slipping, staying in the static-friction regime (μs > μk); (iii) rock the vehicle slowly, or lighten it, so the needed driving force stays below the limiting friction at each attempt.
