Q.In a Young's double slit experiment, the difference in path lengths between the rays starting from the two slits S1 and S2 and reaching a point A on the screen is 0.0075 mm and reaching another point B on the screen on the other side of the central fringe is 0.0015 mm. How many bright and dark fringes are observed between A and B if the wavelength of light used is 6000 Å?

Path diff at A = 12.5λ → centre of 13th dark band; at B = 2.5λ → centre of 3rd dark band; bright bands = 12 + 2 + central = 15; dark = 12 + 2 = 14.

The path difference at A is

0.0075×10−36000×10−10=75×10−76×10−7=12.5=(13−12)λ\frac{0.0075\times10^{-3}}{6000\times10^{-10}} = \frac{75\times10^{-7}}{6\times10^{-7}} = 12.5 = \left(13 - \tfrac12\right)\lambda

so A is at the centre of the 13th dark band on one side. Similarly at B:

0.0015×10−36000×10−10=2.5=(3−12)λ\frac{0.0015\times10^{-3}}{6000\times10^{-10}} = 2.5 = \left(3 - \tfrac12\right)\lambda …
