Worked Examples · Example 7.1

Q.An isosceles prism of refracting angle 179° and refractive index 1.5 is used as a biprism by keeping it 10 cm away from a slit, the edge of the biprism being parallel to the slit. The slit is illuminated by a light of wavelength 500 nm and the screen is 90 cm away from the biprism. Calculate the location of the centre of the 20th dark band.

d = 2A(μ−1)x₁ = π/36 cm; L = 1 m; X₂₀ = 19.5·λL/d = 0.1117 m.

The biprism has a refracting angle A = (180° − 179°)/2 = 0.5° per half. The separation of the two virtual sources is

d=2A(μ−1)x1=2(0.5×π180)(1.5−1)(10)=π36 cmd = 2A(\mu - 1)x_1 = 2\left(0.5\times\frac{\pi}{180}\right)(1.5 - 1)(10) = \frac{\pi}{36}\ \mathrm{cm}

With λ = 500 nm = 5×10⁻⁷ m and L = 10 cm + 90 cm = 1 m, the 20th dark band is at …
