Several practical conditions must all be satisfied together for a real double-slit (or similar) experiment to show a clean, clearly visible interference pattern, each addressing a different way the ideal pattern can otherwise be degraded:

  1. COHERENT SOURCES -- the single most essential requirement. Without a fixed relative phase between the two sources, the positions of constructive and destructive interference drift continuously in time, faster than any detector (including the eye) can register, and no stable pattern is ever seen at all -- just an averaged-out, featureless uniform intensity.

  2. MONOCHROMATIC LIGHT (a single wavelength). Both fringe positions (yn=nλD/dy_n=n\lambda D/d) and fringe width (β=λD/d\beta=\lambda D/d) depend directly on λ\lambda; with mixed wavelengths (e.g. ordinary white light), each wavelength produces its own differently-spaced fringe set, and the overlapping result is a smeared, coloured pattern rather than sharp, well-defined fringes.

  3. EQUAL AMPLITUDES from the two sources. Only with equal amplitudes does destructive interference reach exactly zero intensity at the dark-fringe centres, giving the maximum possible CONTRAST between bright and dark; unequal amplitudes leave a nonzero residual intensity even at the darkest points, washing out the visual contrast of the pattern.

  4. D≫dD\gg d (screen distance much greater than slit separation). This condition was used directly in deriving the linear path-difference formula, and physically ensures the resulting fringe width λD/d\lambda D/d is large enough to actually be seen and measured, rather than compressed into an unresolvably thin band. …
