Copper deficiency causes die-back of shoots (and exanthema/gummosis) in citrus, because copper is a cofactor for enzymes essential to lignin synthesis and normal tissue development.

Copper is a micronutrient required in trace amounts as a component/cofactor of several oxidase enzymes involved in respiration, photosynthesis, and lignin biosynthesis in cell walls. When copper is deficient, newly formed tissues at the shoot tips fail to develop and lignify properly, so the terminal shoots progressively die back from the tip - a symptom well documented in citrus, known as "die-back" and often accompanied by gum exudation (exanthema).
