Molybdenum deficiency shows most dramatically as whiptail disease in cauliflower-type crops, and also impairs nitrogen fixation because molybdenum is a cofactor of the enzymes nitrogenase and nitrate reductase.

Molybdenum (Mo) is required by plants only in trace amounts, but it is an essential cofactor of two important enzymes: NITRATE REDUCTASE (which reduces absorbed nitrate to nitrite/ammonia so it can be used to build amino acids) and NITROGENASE (used by nitrogen-fixing bacteria, including the Rhizobium in legume root nodules, to fix atmospheric nitrogen). Consequently, molybdenum deficiency produces:
