Denitrification is the microbial conversion of nitrate (NO3-) in the soil back into atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2), completing the nitrogen cycle.

In the nitrogen cycle, atmospheric nitrogen (N2) is fixed into usable forms like ammonia and nitrate by nitrogen-fixing and nitrifying bacteria, and this nitrate is absorbed by plant roots. However, some of the nitrate present in waterlogged or anaerobic soils is acted upon by a specific group of bacteria called denitrifying bacteria (e.g., Pseudomonas denitrificans, Thiobacillus denitrificans), which use nitrate as a terminal electron acceptor in place of oxygen under anaerobic conditions. This process reduces nitrate/nitrite step-by-step back into gaseous nitrogen (N2, and sometimes nitrous oxide, N2O), which then escapes from the soil into the atmosphere.
