Nitrification is carried out in two stages by two different bacterial genera: Nitrosomonas converts ammonia to nitrite, and Nitrobacter converts nitrite to nitrate.

Nitrification is the microbial oxidation of ammonia (NH3/NH4+), the form of nitrogen released by decomposition (ammonification) of organic matter, into nitrate (NO3-), the form of nitrogen most readily absorbed and used by plant roots. This process occurs in two sequential steps, each carried out by specialised chemoautotrophic (nitrifying) bacteria:

Step 1 - Nitrite formation: Bacteria of the genus Nitrosomonas (and also Nitrosococcus) oxidise ammonia (NH3) to nitrite (NO2-). These bacteria derive energy for their own metabolism from this oxidation reaction.
