Ammonification is the step of the nitrogen cycle in which decomposer microorganisms break down organic nitrogen (proteins, amino acids, urea) from dead organic matter and excreta into inorganic ammonia (NH3), making nitrogen available again for further transformation (nitrification) and plant uptake.

When plants and animals die, or when animals excrete nitrogenous waste (like urea, uric acid), a large amount of nitrogen remains locked up in complex organic molecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, and amino acids. This organic nitrogen is unusable by plants directly. Ammonification is the microbial process by which saprotrophic bacteria and fungi (ammonifying microorganisms, e.g. Bacillus ramosus, Bacillus vulgaris) decompose these nitrogenous organic compounds and release the nitrogen in the simple inorganic form of ammonia (NH3) or ammonium ions (NH4+) into the soil.

This ammonia can then be:

  • directly absorbed by some plants, or …
