Gymnosperms are economically important as sources of timber, resin/turpentine, paper pulp, important medicines (taxol, ephedrine), edible seeds, and ornamental plants.

Gymnosperms (e.g. Pinus, Cedrus, Cycas, Gnetum, Taxus, Ephedra) contribute to human economy in several major ways:

  1. Timber: Conifers such as Pinus (pine), Cedrus (deodar), and Abies (fir) provide softwood timber widely used in construction, furniture-making, packing cases, and railway sleepers, owing to their straight trunks and relatively easy workability.

  2. Resin and turpentine: Pinus species (e.g. chir pine, Pinus roxburghii) yield oleoresin, which is processed to obtain rosin (used in paints, varnishes, soap, and printing ink manufacture) and turpentine oil (used as a solvent and in some medicinal preparations).

  3. Paper industry: Softwood from conifers is a major raw material for pulpwood, used extensively in manufacturing paper.

  4. Medicinal uses: Taxus (yew) bark and leaves yield taxol, an important anticancer drug used in chemotherapy for breast and ovarian cancers. Ephedra yields the alkaloid ephedrine, used as a bronchodilator in treating asthma, bronchitis, and nasal congestion.
