Tuberculosis, typhoid, and cholera are three major human diseases caused by bacterial pathogens — Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Salmonella typhi, and Vibrio cholerae respectively.

Bacteria are of great medical importance as causal agents of numerous human diseases. Three well-documented examples, each with its causative pathogen:

  1. Tuberculosis (TB) — caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a rod-shaped, acid-fast bacterium that most commonly infects the lungs, causing persistent cough, fever, weight loss, and, if untreated, serious lung damage. It spreads through airborne droplets from an infected person.

  2. Typhoid fever — caused by Salmonella typhi, a rod-shaped bacterium transmitted through food or water contaminated with faecal matter from an infected person. It causes sustained high fever, weakness, abdominal pain, and can be diagnosed with the Widal test.
