Bacteria can be classified by their gas requirements for growth. While normal atmospheric air contains only about 0.04% CO2, some bacteria - called capnophilic (from Greek 'capnos', meaning smoke/CO2, and 'philic', meaning loving) - grow poorly or not at all at this low CO2 level and instead require an elevated CO2 concentration (typically around 5-10%) in their incubation atmosphere for good growth. This is because CO2 is needed by these organisms for certain metabolic/biosynthetic reactions (such as carboxylation reactions) that are limiting at normal atmospheric CO2 levels.
