Viruses show at least three properties associated with living organisms: possession of genetic material, the ability to reproduce (inside a host), and the capacity to mutate.

Viruses occupy a unique position at the border between the living and non-living world — outside a host cell they behave as inert, crystallisable chemical particles (no metabolism, no growth), but once inside a suitable host cell, they display several characteristics typical of living organisms:

  1. Possession of genetic material: every virus has a core of nucleic acid — either DNA or RNA (never both) — that carries the hereditary instructions needed to direct the synthesis of new viral components, just as a living cell's genome does.

  2. Ability to replicate/multiply: once inside a host cell, a virus can hijack the host's cellular machinery (ribosomes, enzymes, energy) to replicate its own genome and manufacture new viral proteins, ultimately assembling many new virus particles from a single infecting one — a form of reproduction, though entirely dependent on (obligate to) a living host.
