The glycocalyx, the outermost mucilaginous covering of the bacterial cell, is what gives bacteria their sticky character.

Bacterial cells commonly possess, outside the cell wall, an additional protective covering made of polysaccharides (sometimes with polypeptides) called the glycocalyx. Depending on how tightly it is organised, it exists in two forms:

  • Slime layer — loosely attached, easily washed off.
  • Capsule — a thick, well-organised, tightly bound layer.

Both forms are gelatinous and hydrophilic, so they trap water and give the cell surface a slimy, sticky texture. This stickiness lets bacteria adhere to surfaces (including host tissues and each other, enabling biofilm formation), and also protects the cell from desiccation and, in pathogenic forms, from phagocytosis by host immune cells.
