Step 1 (Fractional distillation). Used when a liquid mixture's components have boiling points too close together for simple distillation to separate cleanly.

Step 2. A fractionating column is fitted between the distillation flask and the condenser, with a thermometer positioned near the condenser mouth to track the temperature of the vapour actually passing over.

Step 3. As the mixture is heated, each component vaporises and condenses preferentially near its own boiling point while passing up the column, letting the components be collected separately; the process is repeated if a sharper cut is still needed.
