Step 1. Place mm at x=0x=0 and 4m4m at x=rx=r on a line. Let the field-zero point be at xx from mm (so at distance r−xr-x from 4m4m).

Step 2. Setting the field magnitudes equal (they point in opposite directions between the masses, so they can cancel): Gmx2=G(4m)(r−x)2⇒(r−x)2=4x2⇒r−x=2x⇒x=r3\dfrac{Gm}{x^2}=\dfrac{G(4m)}{(r-x)^2}\Rightarrow(r-x)^2=4x^2\Rightarrow r-x=2x\Rightarrow x=\dfrac r3.
