The kinetic theory of gases is built on a small set of simplifying assumptions about molecular size, motion, forces, and collisions; six of them are listed below.

The kinetic theory of gases explains the macroscopic behaviour of a gas (pressure, temperature, etc.) in terms of the microscopic motion of its constituent molecules, based on these postulates:

  1. A gas consists of a very large number of identical molecules that behave like perfectly elastic, rigid, tiny spheres.

  2. The molecules of a gas are in a state of continuous, random motion, moving in all directions with all possible speeds.

  3. The actual volume occupied by the molecules themselves is negligible compared to the total volume of the gas (molecules are treated essentially as point masses for volume purposes).

  4. There is no force of attraction or repulsion between the molecules (or between a molecule and the walls of the container), except during the brief instant of a collision.

  5. All collisions -- between molecules themselves, and between molecules and the container walls -- are perfectly elastic, meaning kinetic energy is conserved in every collision (only the direction and possibly speed distribution among the molecules changes, but total KE of the system is unchanged).
