If both the internal energy U and volume V of an ideal gas are doubled, the pressure stays exactly the same.

For an ideal gas, the internal energy depends only on temperature: U = n Cv T, so U is directly proportional to T. If U doubles, T must also double (T1 = 2T0).

From the ideal gas equation, P V = n R T:

Initially: P0 V0 = n R T0

After the change: V1 = 2V0, T1 = 2T0, so

P1 (2V0) = n R (2T0)

P1 = n R T0 / V0 = P0 …
