The kinetic theory of gases rests on assumptions of point-like molecules in random, elastic-collision motion with no intermolecular forces, whose average kinetic energy is proportional to absolute temperature.

The postulates (basic assumptions) of the kinetic theory of gases are:

  1. A gas is composed of an extremely large number of identical molecules, all in a state of continuous, random motion.

  2. The size of a molecule is negligibly small compared to the average distance between molecules and compared to the size of the container -- molecules are treated as point masses.

  3. Molecules exert no force on one another (no attraction or repulsion) except during the instant of collision -- between collisions they move in straight lines at constant velocity (Newton's first law applies).

  4. All collisions -- between molecules, and between molecules and the container walls -- are perfectly elastic, meaning total kinetic energy is conserved in each collision.

  5. The duration of a collision is negligible compared to the time a molecule spends travelling freely between collisions.

  6. The pressure exerted by a gas on the walls of its container arises entirely from the continuous, rapid bombardment of gas molecules against those walls (transferring momentum on each impact).
