Ventricles need thicker, more muscular walls than auricles because they must generate far greater pumping force to send blood over long distances through the body or lungs.

The heart's chambers are specialised for different pumping tasks. The auricles (atria) are the receiving chambers: they collect blood returning from the veins (the right auricle from the body via the venae cavae, the left auricle from the lungs via the pulmonary veins) and only need to push this blood a short distance downward into the adjoining ventricles through the atrioventricular valves; this requires relatively little force, so the auricle walls are thin. The ventricles, however, are the pumping chambers responsible for propelling blood out of the heart over much longer distances and against much higher resistance: the right ventricle pumps blood through the pulmonary artery to the lungs, and the left ventricle (which has the thickest wall of all four chambers) pumps oxygenated blood through the aorta to the entire body, against the high resistance of the systemic circulation.
