Lymph is the clear, watery fluid formed from blood plasma that escapes into tissue spaces and is drained back into the blood circulation through the lymphatic system.

As blood flows through capillaries, some of its plasma (along with dissolved substances, but with only a little protein) filters out through the thin capillary walls into the spaces between cells, becoming what is called interstitial or tissue fluid. Most of this fluid is reabsorbed directly back into the capillaries, but a portion is instead picked up by a separate network of blind-ended lymphatic capillaries; once inside these vessels, the fluid is called lymph.

Key features of lymph:

  • Composition: similar to blood plasma in its water, ions and small dissolved solute content, but it contains much LESS protein than plasma (since large plasma proteins mostly cannot cross capillary walls) and lacks red blood cells; it does, however, contain white blood cells, predominantly lymphocytes.
  • Colour: colourless to pale yellowish, except lymph draining from the small intestine (called chyle), which appears milky white due to absorbed fat droplets. …
