A closed circulatory system confines blood to vessels throughout, giving fast, well-regulated flow; an open circulatory system releases blood into body sinuses (haemocoel), giving slower, less-regulated flow.

Closed circulatory system:

  • Blood flows continuously within a closed network of blood vessels — arteries, veins, and capillaries — and never directly bathes the tissues.
  • Because the system is a closed loop, blood pressure can be built up and precisely regulated, so blood flow can be directed selectively to organs as needed and circulation is relatively fast.
  • Found in annelids (e.g. earthworm) and all vertebrates (e.g. frog, pigeon, humans).

Open circulatory system:

  • The heart pumps blood (called haemolymph, since it is not fully separated from tissue fluid) into large open spaces called sinuses, collectively forming the haemocoel, where it directly bathes the internal organs before slowly returning to the heart through open-ended vessels. …
