The SA node is a small mass of specialised nodal (myogenic) tissue located in the wall of the right atrium, near the opening of the superior vena cava.
Because its cells can generate rhythmic electrical impulses on their own, without any external nerve stimulus, and because it does so at the fastest intrinsic rate of any part of the heart's conducting system (about 70-75 impulses per minute in a resting adult), it sets the pace for the whole heart — hence the name 'pacemaker'.
