An anastomosis is a natural connection joining two blood vessels together, so blood can be rerouted through the connection if the normal path is obstructed, ensuring continued (collateral) blood supply to a tissue.

Normally, blood flows from arteries into progressively smaller arterioles and then into a capillary bed before draining into venules and veins. An anastomosis is a direct communication or joining between two blood vessels — it may be artery-to-artery, vein-to-vein, or even artery-to-vein — that creates an alternate path for blood flow, sometimes bypassing the normal capillary route.
