A heart beat is one full sequence of contraction and relaxation of the heart's chambers, constituting a single pumping cycle.

The heart works as a rhythmic, self-exciting pump. In each heart beat, the two atria first contract together (atrial systole), pushing blood into the ventricles below; this is quickly followed by contraction of the two ventricles (ventricular systole), which forcefully ejects blood into the pulmonary artery and the aorta; the chambers then relax together (diastole), allowing them to passively refill with blood before the next beat begins. This entire sequence of one contraction-and-relaxation cycle of the heart is together referred to as a single heart beat, and its rhythm is initiated by the sino-atrial node (SA node), the heart's natural pacemaker, located in the wall of the right atrium.
