Methaemoglobin is a form of haemoglobin whose haem iron is oxidised from Fe2+ to Fe3+, so it loses the ability to bind and transport oxygen.

Normal haemoglobin carries oxygen because the iron atom in each haem group is in the ferrous (Fe2+) state, which can reversibly bind an oxygen molecule.

When this iron is oxidised to the ferric (Fe3+) state — by certain drugs, chemicals, nitrites/nitrates, or abnormally, by genetic enzyme deficiency — the resulting pigment is called methaemoglobin.
