In eukaryotes, RNA polymerase II transcribes genes into a primary transcript called heterogeneous nuclear RNA (hnRNA), which contains both coding sequences (exons) and non-coding intervening sequences (introns) and cannot be directly translated. It is converted into functional, mature mRNA through three post-transcriptional processing steps: (1) Capping — a 7-methyl guanosine cap is added to the 5' end of the hnRNA, which protects the RNA from degradation and is later required for ribosome binding during translation.
