An electric heating device (electric iron, heater, toaster, etc.) converts electrical energy into heat via the (Joule heating) effect in a resistive wire. For the heating element used in such devices, the material must have the following characteristics:
-
High resistivity (specific resistance): so that a conveniently short/compact length of wire itself offers enough resistance to dissipate substantial heat () for the required power rating, without needing an impractically long wire.
-
High melting point: the element must operate continuously at a high temperature (often several hundred degrees Celsius) without melting or getting damaged.
-
Small (low) temperature coefficient of resistance: so that its resistance — and hence the current and heat produced — does not change appreciably as the wire heats up during use, giving stable, predictable heating performance.
