Since deflection per unit current is Is=NBA/kI_s=NBA/k, increasing N, B, or A, or reducing the suspension's torsion constant kk, all raise the galvanometer's current sensitivity.

Working

For a moving-coil galvanometer, at equilibrium the deflecting torque due to the current balances the restoring torque of the suspension:

NIBA=kϕ ⇒ Is=ϕI=NBAkNIBA=k\phi\ \Rightarrow\ I_s=\dfrac{\phi}{I}=\dfrac{NBA}{k}

where NN = number of turns, BB = magnetic field of the permanent magnet, AA = area of the coil, kk = torsional restoring constant per unit twist of the suspension.

To increase the current sensitivity (larger deflection ϕ\phi per unit current II), any of the following can be done:

  1. Increase the number of turns NN in the coil.
  2. Increase the magnetic field BB (use stronger magnets, or reduce the air gap so the radial field is stronger).
  3. Increase the area AA of the coil. …
