Consider a conductor of cross-sectional area , with free electrons per unit volume, each of charge magnitude , drifting with average drift velocity along the conductor.
In a small time interval , each electron moves a distance . So all the free electrons within a cylindrical volume of length and cross-section (volume ) will cross a given cross-section of the conductor in that time.
