Allergic (immediate hypersensitivity) reactions are mediated by IgE antibodies.

When an allergen (like pollen or dust) first enters a sensitive individual, B cells produce IgE antibodies specific to that allergen; these IgE molecules bind to receptors on mast cells and basophils.
