Aerobic respiration inside the mitochondrion involves two broad stages that occur in two different compartments. The citric acid cycle, which completely oxidises the two-carbon acetyl unit derived from pyruvate, takes place in the mitochondrial matrix.

The second stage — passing the electrons carried by NADH and FADH2 on to oxygen, coupled to ATP synthesis — is the job of the electron transport system. This metabolic pathway is built into the inner mitochondrial membrane, where its components are arranged in sequence: NADH dehydrogenase (complex I), ubiquinone, the cytochrome bc1 complex (complex III), the mobile carrier cytochrome c, and the cytochrome c oxidase complex (complex IV). …
