Q.How will you prepare n-propyl iodide from n-propyl bromide?
Step 1. Converting one haloalkane into another with a different halogen, using an existing bromo (or chloro) compound as the starting material, is exactly the halogen-exchange chemistry of the Finkelstein reaction.
Step 2. n-Propyl bromide is heated with a concentrated solution of sodium iodide in dry acetone.
Step 3. The bromide is displaced by iodide (an SN2 process), and the reaction is driven to completion because the NaBr by-product is insoluble in dry acetone and precipitates out, continually removing it from the equilibrium.
Step 4. The product is n-propyl iodide: CH3CH2CH2Br + NaI (dry acetone, heat) gives CH3CH2CH2I + NaBr.
CH3CH2CH2Br + NaI --(dry acetone, heat)--> CH3CH2CH2I + NaBr (the Finkelstein reaction).
